The Mental Health Benefits of Talking with a Therapist, Not a Friend

Friends Can't Replace the Benefits of Talking with a Therapist

Friends are important. We can bounce ideas off of one another and share our thoughts and opinions. But there are times when we need more from our friends than they can provide. A therapist truly listens without making it personal. It’s natural to go back and forth in conversation with friends about problems, frustrations, and successes. However, it can sometimes become burdensome and unfulfilling if you seek more than an opinion and guidance. A friend who is a good listener can be an asset when combined with therapy; however, a friend cannot replace the benefits of talking with a therapist.

It can overwhelm your friends if you have significant trauma or events to process. They are not trained to handle or provide advice to your situation. This can put stress on relationships and pressure on friends and family. It does not mean they don’t want to support you. They are simply not suited for the job.

Therapists Know How to Truly Listen

Conversations with a therapist are different from those we share with our friends and family. While it is important to have a comfortable rapport with your therapist, it is a completely different type of relationship. A therapist is prioritizing you. You both have the same goal: your success.

Therapists are trained to listen closely to every word. They are not comparing themselves to you, like a coworker or fellow parent may. A therapist is not going to take things personally. Seeking a therapist may even make you a better listener.

What Are the Benefits of Talking With a Therapist?

  1. You have their full attention: There are no distractions (no phone, TV, or music). If possible, they are making eye contact and reassuring you. Their body language is active without being preoccupied with other things.

  2. They provide gentle prompts: An active listener may reassure you with open ended questions without turning the conversation towards themselves. Everything in this discourse should be about you.

  3. A therapist is focused on your success and comfort: If you are asking for feedback, a good listener will always give input in relation to what you are looking for. That does not mean always agreeing, or saying what you want to hear, but keeping your goals in the forefront.

  4. They are checking on you: A good listener should also have your well-being in mind. They should not prod for details if you are upset or push you to keep going if you are drained.

The Benefits of Talking With Therapist Who Truly Listens

Sometimes, it can be as simple as getting something off your chest, without an anecdotal story about how someone else has it “tougher.” When you can share your emotions with someone who fully listens, you are more likely to be able to move forward. A good listener is there to support your sharing. They are not providing any input unless you ask for it directly. Sometimes, just having someone there who is fully engaged but silent is all you need to process your thoughts. When you feel heard, you can open up more and truly begin to heal and process your experiences.

Finding a Therapist Who Understand You

Finding a therapist is not a one-size-fits-all process. Therapists have different styles, specialties, and personalities. You must get along with your therapist and feel comfortable during your sessions. At Renewed Wellness Counseling, you can choose from our team of eight therapists, so you can decide on the best fit. While we know that our team members are exceptional listeners, we understand that personal connections are a huge part of successful therapy.
