Q&A With Emily

What drew you to becoming a therapist?

I’ve always been curious about how people grow and make sense of their experiences. Over time, I became especially interested in how early childhood shapes the ways we cope, connect, and respond to stress as adults. My experience working with veterans also influenced my passion for supporting people through trauma and major life transitions.

Who do you enjoy working with?

I work with teens and adults, especially those who feel stuck in patterns they can’t fully explain. I’m drawn to supporting people navigating trauma, relationship challenges, early motherhood, sleep issues, and chronic stress. I also enjoy working with individuals moving through major transitions or identity shifts.

What do you specialize in?

  • Trauma (childhood, sexual, birth, combat, domestic violence)
  • Attachment patterns and relationship cycles
  • Postpartum and early motherhood
  • Sleep challenges (insomnia and nightmares)
  • Anxiety, depression, and chronic stress
  • Life transitions and identity changes

What can someone expect in their first few sessions with you?

I aim to create a space where clients feel at ease and genuinely heard. Many people come in not knowing where to start—this is completely normal. I guide the conversation by asking questions, understanding what feels most pressing, and helping identify a starting point that feels manageable. You don’t need to prepare anything or know exactly what to say.

What approaches do you use in therapy?

I integrate CBT, ACT, Written Exposure Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and CBT for Insomnia and Nightmares, along with attachment-focused work. These approaches help clients understand what’s happening internally and build practical skills they can use outside of sessions.

What do you hope clients gain from working with you?

I hope clients walk away with a clearer understanding of what they’re feeling, why certain patterns show up, and tools that help them navigate stress more effectively. My goal is for therapy to feel useful—something that brings clarity and direction rather than overwhelm.

How does your background influence your work?

Growing up as a military child and living overseas meant navigating frequent transitions and constant change. That experience gave me a real understanding of instability, adjustment, and how identity develops under pressure.

Becoming a parent later added insight into exhaustion, responsibility, and the emotional weight many people carry quietly. Both experiences inform how I show up in the therapy room.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

Spending time with my husband, daughter, and our two dogs is a big part of my life. We enjoy trying new restaurants and being outdoors. These everyday moments help me recharge and stay grounded.

Where is your office in New Bern?

Our in-person office is located at 312 S. Front Street, Suite 7, inside the Century 21 Zaytoun Raines building on the second floor.

For your first appointment, you can enter through the front door on Front Street. The receptionist will guide you to the second floor, or I can meet you at the entrance.

Once you are familiar with the office, many clients find it easier to park behind the building and take the stairwell up to the second floor. Our office suites are located to the left once you reach the top of the stairs.
